v. Laminated, Safety & Security Glass

It is more resistant to breakage than normal float glass.
When safety and security are a must, Guardian offers a wide array of performance glass products to meet your needs.
Laminated - From entrance doors and glass floors, to aquariums and display cases, laminated glass is the perfect safety solution. Two or more panes of glass are bonded together by a durable plastic interlayer, which enables the glass to strongly resist penetration by impacting objects. However, should it break, the glass will tend to remain in its frame, minimizing the risk of injury from sharp edges and flying or falling glass particles.
Tempered - Tempered glass is often referred to as safety glass because it is more resistant to breakage than normal float glass. Yet if it gets broken, it usually breaks into relatively small
pieces, which are less likely to cause serious injury.
Armour-G™ - When security is at stake, Armour-G provides a robust barrier for your protection. Guardian's Armour-G brand of products is designed to withstand intentional impact or assault, keeping intruders out and criminals detained. And because nothing is more dangerous than flying glass shards in an explosion, Armour-G is highly resistant to gunfire and explosives, providing critical protection in areas where such threats are a possibility.

vi. Energy- Efficiency / Low -E Glass
Insulating glass units improve the thermal performance of glazing by providing a thermal break.

Low-emissivity (low-E) coatings are microscopically thin metal layers that are deposited on a window surface to help keep heat on the same side of the glass from which it originated. Depending on the climate, and whether it's for commercial, residential or automotive use, Guardian has developed a number of different coatings to achieve specific results. The goal is to find the proper balance between capturing and reflecting solar heat.
ClimaGuard® Low-E - ClimaGuard Low-E gives homeowners the energy saving benefits of low-E glass, with each product in the series designed for a specific climate. For example, in Michigan, you want to capture solar heat to offset heating costs, but in Florida, that same glass would not be effective because the goal there is to limit solar heat gain to save on cooling costs.
Neutral 70 - For the first time, Guardian has brought together high-performance and durability in a single low-E glass product. So, if you're looking for a low-E product that heat-treated and handled like a normal sheet of glass - Neutral 70 is the product for you.
SunGuard® Advanced Architectural Glass - Architects build with light and create amazing livable environments, but there are challenges. That's why SunGuard Advanced Architectural products were created to exceed the performance of ordinary low-E glass. In fact, independent studies have shown that over a 10-year period, SunGuard coated glass products can save thousands of dollars in upfront and ongoing energy-related costs for a typical commercial building.
Solar Management Glass/IRR Windshields - Infrared reflective glass is auto glazing with low-E. Windshields with IRR reflect sunlight, which significantly reduces the amount of sun absorbed into the vehicle. The resulting effect is a reduced load on vehicle air conditioning units.

3. Pilkington UK Profile

i. Solar Control Glass& Thermal insulation

Overview
Solar Control is a key issue in terms of energy saving:
• In hot conditions, or for buildings with high internal loads, it is used to minimize solar heat gain by rejecting solar radiation and help control glare
• In more temperate conditions, it can be used to balance solar control with high levels of natural light.
Our range of solar control products coversall architectural requirements, offering solutions for large and small glazed areas of all types of buildings.

Defined as follows:
1- Reflectance - the proportion of solar radiation reflected back into the atmosphere
2- Direct transmittance - the proportion of solar radiation transmitted directly through the glass
3- Absorbance - the proportion of solar radiation absorbed by the glass
In hot conditions or for buildings with high internal loads, solar control glass is used to minimize solar heat gain. It allows sunlight to pass through a window or façade while radiating and reflecting away a large degree of the sun's heat.

ii. Thermal Insulation

Overview
Today's builders, regulators and wider communities are demanding more from glass. In particular, the focus on energy efficiency and tighter regulations are creating a greater need for low-emissivity (low-e) glass. Through advances in low-e glass, windows now play a big part in energy conservation and comfort, minimizing heat loss and internal condensation.
Low-e glass reduces the heat loss of the building by:
(1) Reflecting the energy emitted by room heaters and surfaces back into the room (long wave radiation)
(2) Allowing high transmission of the solar radiation (short wave radiation) through the glass to benefit from passive solar heat gain through the glass.
During winter, low-emissivity glass can reduce heat loss while allowing high levels of valuable free solar gain to heat buildings with no significant loss in natural light.
In summer, however, it can become uncomfortably hot. To maximize energy efficiency all year round, the ideal glazing solution often combines solar control and thermal insulation.

iii. Noise Control

Overview
No matter where it originates from, whether railways, aircraft or factories, noise is all around.
Future trend research suggests that traffic and noise in general will only get worse.
The careful and considered selection of glass can be crucial in helping to reduce noise level and meet noise requirements.
Glass controls noise by:
• Reflecting the noise back towards the source, and
• Absorbing the noise energy within the glass
We can improve the sound insulation of glass in different ways - increasing the thickness of the pane, using laminated glass on its own or within an insulating glass unit (the larger the gap between the panes, the better the insulation).
The best performance is however obtained when using an acoustic laminated glass such as Pilkington Optiphon™, and for the highest noise insulation, within an insulating glass unit, Pilkington Insulight™ Phon.

iv. Safety / Security

Overview
Demanding safety legislation has highlighted the critical areas where modern safety glazing must comply with the required safe practice. Innovations in the development of Safety/Security glass has opened up new avenues of design, allowing people to be protected from personal injury or in the most extreme cases protecting buildings from various forms of attack.
• The term “Safety” is applied to glazing used to reduce the risk of accidents by impact, fracture, shattering, or in a fire
• The term “Security” is applied to glazing, which in addition to “Safety”, is able to withstand a variety of deliberate attacks such as manual, ballistic or blast resistant.Using the right type of glass for security applications is not enough to ensure the necessary resistance to severe loads. Since the glass can behave differently in different framing systems, it is imperative to combine high performance glazing with high quality framing systems to achieve the level of protection required.

v. Self-cleaning

Overview
Thanks to its revolutionary coating, our Pilkington Activ™ self-cleaning range of glass stays cleaner, all-year round. Its unique dual-action coating uses the forces of nature to help keep the glass free from dirt, giving not only the practical benefit of less cleaning, but also clearer, better-looking windows.

The unique dual-action self-cleaning coating is located on the external glass pane.
It has got photo-catalytic and hydrophilic properties, and works in two stages:
• (Stage 1)The coating reacts with natural daylight to break down and loosen organic dirt
• (Stage 2) When it rains, instead of forming droplets, the water spreads evenly over the surface of the glass, forming a thin film and helping to wash away any dirt and reduce streaks.
